One of the first things you need to do for GPSR compliance is set up manufacturer records. Each product in your store needs to be linked to a manufacturer with complete contact information. Here is how to do it properly.
What Data GPSR Requires
For every manufacturer, GPSR requires the following to be displayed on product pages:
- Manufacturer name – the legal company name
- Postal address – full street address, not just country
- Email address – a working contact email
- Phone number – direct contact number
Also, if the manufacturer is not based in the EU, you must also provide EU Responsible Person details: a separate name, address, and email for the EU-based representative.
Creating Manufacturer Records
With the GPSR Compliance plugin, manufacturer records are stored as a custom post type in WordPress. Go to Products > GPSR Manufacturers and click “Add New.”
Fill in the required fields:
- Enter the company name as the title
- Fill in address, email, phone, and website
- Check “EU-based manufacturer” if they are located in an EU member state
- If not EU-based, fill in the EU Representative section below
- Click Publish
EU vs Non-EU Manufacturers
The key difference is simple: EU-based manufacturers do not need a separate EU Responsible Person because they already serve that role. Non-EU manufacturers (from China, the US, the UK, etc.) must have an EU-based entity listed as their representative.
Your plugin handles this automatically. When you check the “EU-based” flag, the EU Representative fields become optional. When unchecked, they become required (if you have validation enabled in settings).
Assigning Manufacturers to Products
There are three ways to assign a manufacturer to products:
- Per-product – edit a product, go to the GPSR tab, select a manufacturer from the dropdown
- Default manufacturer – set a default in plugin settings so all new products get the same manufacturer
- Bulk edit – use the bulk edit wizard to assign a manufacturer to hundreds of products at once
For most stores, the fastest approach is: create your manufacturers, set the most common one as default, then use bulk edit to handle exceptions.
Tips
- Double-check addresses – incomplete addresses are the most common compliance issue
- Keep manufacturer records updated when companies move or change contact details
- If you sell products from many manufacturers, use the search/filter in the GPSR tab to find them quickly
- Export your manufacturer data via CSV periodically as a backup
